2 - Nexman

Following the release of Spreadsheet Ocean Funk I still can’t put the Polyend Tracker down for long!

3 - Couchsurfer

I made this little track on the #polyendtracker, which was playing samples and also sequencing the Behringer Pro-VS, during the kids’ BJJ and dance classes. I then sat down at home to record it and one channel of the RCA cables that I connect to a tiny (and somewhat bobbins) U-Control audio interface was busted. GREAT. So I cobbled together a disgusting mess from 5 cables and adapters and was able to finally record it! Bit frustrating but it got done! I tweaked the VS live, the Tracker is sequencing all the samples.

4 - Recovery

I started making this track in a noisy BJJ dojo whilst the kids were training. I thought it was terrible, until I reluctantly re-opened it whilst they were at a dance class, and there were actually some elements in there I liked.

I did a bit of resampling on the Polyend Tracker to combine samples here, something I’ve not done before.

Moody techno on a Polyend Tracker and Behringer JT Mini produced whilst on a little family getaway

8 - Cold Blow Hippo

JT Mini and Polyend Tracker whilst on a quick weekend getaway with the family. Analog arps collapsing into glitchy 4 bit chaos and looping back into smoothness.

9 - Sleep In The Wreckage

I got a Micro synth for portable chords (it’s 4 note poly). The JT4000m has a TRS midi port but it’s the opposite type to the tracker so annoyingly I have to use adapters rather than a stereo 3.5mm TRS cable like I’d hoped! Ah well. I might build an inverting cable (I have a DS-1 and some of the kids’ toys on the workbench to finish fixing first tho’!). I like the JT, it’s VERY digital sounding though, so I leaned into that and turned off antialiasing on the tracker for more lofi crunch.

This is the first time I can remember sequencing MIDI cc codes; the Tracker is tweaking the filter cutoff. I’ve been musically uninspired for the last month or so, been focused on shifting the Christmas Cheese induced poundage, so it’s glad to get back on the horse! It’s way more fun tracking CC codes than tracking calories and macros!

I didn’t notice the kickdrum dominating the mix until I listened back on my Mac - I mixed this on tiny little cheap earbuds instead of my quarter-way decent cans! I might do a remix at a later date.

11 - My World Is PIIIIIIIIG

I don’t have as much time for music this year, so as ever I’m recording in snatches of time whilst the kids are at their clubs. I am, however, trying to learn to actually play the keyboards, which I expect will help my music making eventually (!).

12 - Sofa Slug

I got 10 minutes in and a kid not participating in the class was interested in my Tracker so I let him play with it. I finally got it back about 40 minutes later! I think I accidentally created another gearhead there - sorry kid! Fair play, he figured it out very fast, he was sampling the radio and everything.

Thankfully I’d saved my track so I got it home, sat on the sofa and hooked in my ProVS Mini to add some shimmering lofi strings on top (oscillator set to classic mode). The new 2.0 firmware on the ProVS has two new effects, Reverb and Ensemble, so I used Ensemble. It’s a bit much if you dime it (which I ALWAYS do with effects to start with! Why use it if you can’t hear it? Subtlety is overrated!) but dialled back it sounded alright.

I was so into this track I almost missed the kids’ dance recital! (which was very cute). The Polyend Tracker is a time machine that only goes forwards!

Not a flattering camera angle, I’m not quite as fat as I look here slumped back into the sofa! Haha!

I’m waiting for an X-Touch control surface before getting back to the analog rack - I’m fed up of mixing off a computer, it’s fiddly and takes me out of the music. I hope it gets shipped soon!

13 - Sawbones

I bought a crossover MIDI cable so I can connect the Micro to the tracker using TRS only MIDI

Composed during the kids’ Jiu Jitsu classes and mixed on the sofa later.

14 - Lantern

Worked on this track whilst my youngest was at dance class

15 - Thumps

It’s been a weary Sunday afternoon that I’ve slept through most of since church and before the kids’ Nativity play later, but I’ve figured out how to sync an instrument over MIDI from the Polyend Tracker AND route it through the effects bus live, so the K2 is playing the lead melody here in real time, everything else is samples.

I lost the first take ‘cos I was trying to figure out the “perform” feature of the Polyend Tracker - no dice, it confused me and I ran away. Will try again with it some time.

16 - Rags

Produced largely whilst watching the kids at their sports clubs, but also sat on the sofa with the Tracker driving the K2 (MS-20 knockoff)

17 - Fragile

Textures are me rubbing a £4 contact mic on my sofa. There’s a snare in there provider by the Polyend Tracker (which is also the sequencer). The rest is a Behringer ProVS.
