I was asked recently about how to practise bass. I think it’s similar to physical fitness…

I recommend structuring bass playing practise a bit like physical fitness. Fitness has 3 main parts - strength, conditioning and flexibility (and yeah loads of sports specific stuff and balance and nutrition but let’s keep it simple!)

Bass playing likewise has:

  1. Hand co-ordination and dexterity
  2. Grooving with the rhythm of the song
  3. Chords, scales and all that

So I recommend structuring practise thusly!
