Shinbones Man - Listen Brother (with video)

By Gavin Davies

Wearing a hot and sweaty Hulk Hogan mask in a studio that I rotated 90 degrees…

… (and almost dropped in the process, having to scream for my wife like Ozzy screaming “SHARUUUUUUN” to prevent me from dropping an awful lot of synths on the hard floor! why am I such an omnishambles?!), I’ve now got more space to move, dance, and HULK UP, BROTHA! I’ve taken the modular away, wasn’t using it much, but I will no doubt bring it out again. I can now reach the pots on the RD8 and Wasp much more easily which feels less, I guess, stressful. I’ve also hooked up a Korg strobe tuner pedal to the aux out because analog gear loves to drift around, except where DCOs are involved!

I haven’t recorded much on my synths lately as the mixer was given to me to use for church, and whenever I bring it home I have to rewire it all and I can seldom be bothered! So what I’ve done is bought a patchbay (Behringer Ultrapatch 300) and jacked all the synths into the back so it’s just a bunch of brightly coloured 30cm leads to connect when I get home. Nice!

Unfortunately, I still have no idea how to mount a camera! It dips sadly as the song goes on. And you can’t really see the Hulk mask much anyway, I just look like a Fuzzy Sidebottom instead!

It’s fun to be back on the analog gear, although I’m still getting SUPER absorbed in the Polyend tracker; whenever the kids are at their clubs, I can be found sat ignoring the other parents, cans on, making tunes from samples :-) Ahh, happy times, I’m very grateful for it, what a smashing piece of gear!

Anyway, THIS track uses:

  • Behringer Pro VS - chords and texture. Not used it in about 9 months and I found that with high resonance I’m getting intermittent crackle and pop. Any ideas what that could be? I don’t think it’s peaking, sounds like a dodgy cable but when not in use the line is silent, and I don’t have gating set up on the channel…
  • Behringer Wasp - top line. Normally I use this warm fuzzy guy for bass but it does a curiously Atari sounding lead!
  • Make Noise 0-coast - bassline
  • Behringer RD8 - hi hat
  • Alesis SR16 - kick/snare
  • Behringer Deepmind 6 - counter melody, noodling, filter craziness, controller keyboard
  • Squarp Pyramid - sequencer
  • Behringer X-Air XR12 - mixer
