Hand built Big Muff J Mascis mod (with video)

By Gavin Davies

Tiny but vicious box of doomtone

I bought this Big Muff kit from Fuzzdog.

A couple of tiny issues:

  1. One of the 100nf capacitors was missing, or more likely, I lost it on my workbench. I’ve built around 20 Pedalparts kits and I’ve never had a missing part so benefit of the doubt.
  2. One of the caps was a different rating to what’s stated in the docs - it wasn’t a 3n9 but something close to that.
  3. The jack sockets supplied were standard jack sockets, not Lumberg KLBM-3 1/4” sockets, and I couldn’t fit them in the kit with the standard drilling template, so I had to order some from Farnell. These came next day so no big deal.

The build was as fun as ever, I find it very soothing! Docs were easy to follow, although the website states “New doc on the way. BOMs are identical to the previous INSTRUCTION PDF”. Took me about 3 hours total including drilling etc.

I think I say the enclosure is a 1590B in the video, but it’s a 1590A, which is about half the width of a “normal” 1590B guitar pedal enclosure.

Tone-wise, it goes from shrill and fizzy to boomy bass; there is a LOT of sweep. Gain gets raunchy VERY fast. If you want a wall of sound, or a fuzzed-out lead, this is a great pedal.

Now if only I could play even 1% as well as Mascis!
