Shinbones Man - Burs (with video)

By Gavin Davies

Many years ago, my mate Josh got Gil (GMCFOSHO) to draw me a birthday picture, it was very special, so today I got inspired by the drumbeat to the legendary “Rifle Burs”. However I made it with an RD-9 instead of a gunshot and changed the pattern a bit, so it’s not the hardest possible beat on my version. Made on Christmas Day to sweat out the food coma.

I jacked my cheap Yamaha guitar straight into the XR-12 mixer and used the built in amp sim, gated it and cut all the lows for a 90s industrial approximation. It’s too loud in the mix, I shoulda listened on headphones, I’m playing with a “musician’s mix” whereby the live instruments are mixed up ‘cos ego (even though I’m only a guitarist in the technical sense that I own one and know which way up it goes!). That’s live music though!

I rarely use the RD-9; I think I mostly bought it because of how Rebirth RB:308 changed my musical life in the late 90s, I’m not really a fan of its sound except on acid tracks, but I ran it through a guitar amp sim on the XR12 for fun.

I’m using the X-Touch for mixer faffing, it’s more tactile than a computer, but I still find that any complex adjustments are better done on my Mac. I’m glad I got it though; I don’t need a computer on to do a basic mix now. H8 computaz!!
