Shinbones Man - Standing Orders
Coming soon to streaming platforms! See https://distrokid.com/hyperfollow/shinbonesman/standing-orders
Available on:
1 - Sicks
Gloomy driving darkwave electrosynthpop.
- Bass: Wasp
- Lead: Pro-VS
- Beats: SR-16
- Sequencer: Squarp Pyramid
- Sampler: Pocket Operator
I tracked the drums into separate channels. Aux right on my SR-16 doesn’t work. That sucks! But I did manage a gated reverb on the snare for extra goth - thank Jon for the tip on that one!
I foolishly forgot to set my webcam to 1080p, so it’s only 720p, oops!
2 - Sprinkle Fish
Very late at night (for me!) I decided to play synths rather than go to bed.
The sound behind the track
Slower and moodier than I usually go. I slowed down the tempo to faff about with the clock on the Make Noise 0-coast and it all sounded better so I kept it!
Hand-built delay, HoF reverb, RD8 and SR16 on the beats, modular and DM6 leads, 0-coast bass
A bit peaky on the audio interface, which is a shame because I like this track. I’m going to have to start using my decent Scarlett USB interface, not the cheap Behringer one I reckon… It’s just long to wire it all up! I might re-record this tune. With less worse keyboard playing. Maybe.
3 - Where’s Frankie
Moody synthy sampledarkwave
Sample from “The Man With The Golden Arm”, which is in the public domain
- Bass - Wasp
- Drums - SR16
- Lead - ProVS
- Samples - Pocket Operator
4 - Perky Sidebar
Cheery little live tune with some pretty furry bass
- Bass - Behringer Wasp
- Chords - Behringer Deepmind 6
- Beats - Behringer RD-8, Alesis SR-16
- Top line - Make Noise 0-coast
5 - The Swarm
Angry sounding synth-punk
Behringer’s WASP, distorted through a guitar amp sim in the X-Air mixer, with some SR-16 beats and a bit of Pro-VS on top.
6 - One Hand Dark
Knackered at the end of a long, hard day. I wanted a spacious, slightly creepy feel with some groove.
The gear behind the track
Sequenced on a Squarp Pyramid.
I got a second hand desk from Ebay so I have enough channels (for now!). I looped in my hand-built delay and phaser pedals.
The “talking” part is an NW-1 oscillator through a fixed filter bank.
RD8, RD9 and RD8, probably some SR16 in there too.
I’ve been trying to master the sequence mode in the Pyramid but I’m not quite there yet so I’m still triggering tracks on the fly.
7 - Maintain the Weirdness
A bit moody, a bit gothy, a bit sad, a bit groovy… A bit like me! :D
I went to Machina Bristolica on Saturday. It was ace! There were so many synths and modules to try out, so many interesting people to chat to…
I came back with a fistful of cables that light up!
The sound behind the track
I’m using a Squarp Pyramid to sequence. This is the first time I’ve used the Sequence mode rather than triggering each track live - this means I can cut between groups of tracks with a single press.
I faff around with the settings live. That’s what man DO!
I am told this is how Ableton works!
- Chords: Deepmind 6
- Lead lines: - TD-3-MO
- Effects: hand-built by me delay, HoF reverb
- Beats: SR-16 with claps on RD-6
- Bassline: 0-coast
- Mixer - Behringer Eurolive UFX2442-fx pro. This is the same mixer my church uses so I bought a second hand one from a nice man on Reverb.com so I could master its features! Big step up from my lil Xenyx

8 - Late Video
A few chords I’ve been buzzing around with for a few days.
The sound
I had a prior attempt at recording this and it was clipping all over the place so I spent a few bob on a longer USB cable so I can use my Scarlett interface and not the lil Behringer. I didn’t get the audio balance right - left chan is a bit stronger than the right - so I need to keep tweakin’ I reckon.
Maybe I should pass just some white noise through to calibrate the balance before I record?

9 - Richard Put My Bandana in the Bin
Once, Richard put my bandana in the bin. And he banged his keyboard until CruiseControl was fixed. This track is me grassing him up.
I took delivery of an X-touch to control my mixer with and this is me experimenting with it. The lead that sounds like a cat is the WASP, bass is from Behringer K2, beats RD8, wispy lead is on the Deepmind 6.
Just messing around really!

10 - Zero One
I had a rare spare hour when the rest of the family were out so I had a little play in the studio…
My new home studio layout is working very well for me; the Eurorack and acid boxes are accessible now, and I have a little submixer in the cupboard bringing a stereo pair into the hi-z channels on the Behringer XR12 digital mixer. Cable situation is ‘nanas but where isn’t it?
I’m waiting on some speaker stands but for now they’re back in the cupboard.

11 - Richard Boxley (and His Pint)
A Boc and it’s Pint, a ballad for the ages.
I got a new mic today for church - a Sennheiser XS Wireless 2 - and I thought I’d test it out on this electrogoth track :-)
Live, one take, freestyled it. Can’t sing, don’t care!
Just don’t spill Boc’s pint, OK? The boy works hard.
Track details: bass Behringer Wasp, drums Alesis SR16, lead line Make Noise 0-Coast and some modules

12 - The Hubs of Tummus
Noodling around on a moody track. The title came from a spoonerism from my delivery lead at work!
The sound
- RD-8 on the beats. Used some 6/4 over 4/4 for the fill.
- RD-6 cymbal.
- Pro-VS on the chords. I controlled resonance and filter cutoff via the Pyramid’s CC out, which gave it a steppy effect.
- Deepmind 6 on the lead.
- 0-coast on the bass.

13 - Long Time Coming
I started this track on 28th Jan, but it didn’t sit right. The mixer I use is primarily for church usage, and I had a couple of services I needed it for, and when I got home I couldn’t be bothered to recable it all… So there it sat! I didn’t do any music for two months, I was more busy fixing things and writing games.
And tonight, after using it for a church service, I wired it all back in and fired off a recording… Unfortunately my PC went to sleep during the recording so the XAir threw up its hands and didn’t record the whole track! The second half was a lot more extreme with noise and filter action and a lot more percussion breakdowns.
Oh well, this is what survived. I don’t fancy revisiting this track anymore!

- Behringer Wasp - bass

14 - Waspy
I ordered a Behringer Wasp for £135 a few months ago. It turned up today. I love the sound; the top end of it is really interesting.
However, it arrived with several potentiometers seized and I damaged the knobs unseizing them. Also, the jack sockets are incredibly tight and the MIDI socket is wobby.
Still, it sounds fantastic to my cloth ears!
I mixed and recorded this track on a Behringer XR12 digital mixer that I am evaluating for use in church. So far, it’s a great little unit! No physical faders fields a bit strange at first but I’m getting used to it as I figure out things like how best to connect it to the network, recording, signal routing, playback, and all the features… So doing a few tracks on it seems a great way to get to grips with it!
15 - Bloxwich
Another track about a top boy! This time with some 4 to the floor drive, drone bass, and gothy melodies. I’m trying to be more minimal still, so lineup:
Bass - Wasp, Beats - RD8 Melodies - Pro-VS
Got some filtered sidechain ducking the Wasp from the RD-8.
16 - Dead Empire
Been feeling rough lately, not much energy at all, but as the skies began to bruise in this kingdom of rains, I managed this moody Saturday evening tune.
Samples - Korg Volca Sample. Taken from “The Man With the Golden Arm”. Beats - RD8 Sequencer - Squarp Pyramid Main line - Behringer Deepmind 6 Bassline - Behringer Wasp Top line - Make Noise 0-coast
