Shinbones Man - rd8-fx-pedal-chaos (with video)

By Gavin Davies

Patchbay going wild! I sequenced a simple polymetric pattern on the Squarp Pyramid triggering the Behringer RD-8 drum machine. Kick/snare are in 8s, hats in 5s, toms in 7s and cowbell in 9s (I think!) and patched in all kinds of silly noises. I routed the different voices through my patchbay into pedals I’ve built:

  • Kick is going through annihilator fuzz
  • Hats are going through Green Ringer and Moon Phaser and a J Mascis mod Muff
  • Snare is going through a Warship and Quack envelope filter
  • Cowbell is going through the octave master and getting mad glitchy
  • Percussion is going through a Gristleiser

These pedals are built from kits from Fuzzdog and Jed’s Peds.

On a muggy, stormy day here in Wales, I’ve recently gotten back into making analog music where I have an hour to make something and I just post whatever it is (largely for my own records really!). I find the joy goes out of music if I feel I have to make something amazing, and grovelling around on the floor with pedals gives me a similar feeling to playing with my Lego knights when I was a kid! The stuff I make on the Polyend Tracker is very different - more controlled, I guess, more structured and thought out - but the analog rack is like a climbing frame! It’s all hobbies and fun for me.

I have more or less sussed out polymetrics on the Squarp Pyramid - it’s not as simple as “last step” on something like a Arturia or Elektron device, it’s more about beats and measures and time signatures and zoom, but it is possible. Next I want to get more into the actual polyrhythms on the Pyramid - 5 beats patterns overlaid on 4 beat patterns, for example, I’ve never really done that. Well, not on purpose, anyway!
